Beautiful People | Valentine's Edition

When I saw the subject for this month's Beautiful People writing link-up, I knew exactly who I wanted to write about ... Hans Scholl and Gisela Schertling. While Resist is by no means a romance, there is a budding relationship between them which is sprinkled throughout the novel. For those of you who don't know, this book is based on the true story of Hans and Sophie Scholl who resisted the Nazis during WWII. The book is told from Hans' POV. Anyway, I have yet to set eyes on a photograph of Hans and Gisela together so I'll just be posting pictures of Hans and stealing cute pictures from Pinterest.

1. How did they first meet?

Hans and Gisela met at the Scholl household in Ulm, Germany. Hans' younger sister, Sophie, introduced them to each other.

“Sophie’s told me so much about you."
A gentle voice caused my head to turn. Gisela was still looking at me. I balanced the plate on my hand and stared back. How had I suddenly lost my ability to speak?
“Oh, ah, she hasn’t told me much about you.” I regretted the words immediately.

2. What were their first impressions of each other?

Hans thought she was really sweet and tenderhearted, not to mention very beautiful. But he didn't want to get involved with her because of the war. Gisela found him to be a profound, sincere person whom she wanted to know better. She had a schoolgirl crush on him ever since Sophie first told Gisela about her "favorite" brother.

3. How long have they been a couple?

They are only an official couple for a very short time. Because of Hans' involvement in the resistance, he doesn't want to enter into a relationship with Gisela for her own sake.

I knew this was going to happen. I knew I couldn’t suppress my feelings for her no matter how hard I tried. I would either need to walk away from her now, or finally surrender. I made my decision as I leaned forward, placing both hands on her flushed face. She stared into my eyes, and I lost my breath.

4. How committed/loyal are they to each other? Would they break up over a secret or a disagreement? Could stress drive them apart? Would they die for each other?

They are very committed and loyal to each other amidst the danger and uncertainty threatening their relationship. I'm certain Hans would die for her.

5. List 5 “food quirks” they know about each other. (Ex: how they take their coffee, if they’re allergic to something, etc….and feel free to mention other non-food quirks!)

I'm going to go with non-food quirks. Hans quotes from books quite regularly and he leaves piles of books around his apartment. Gisela enjoys instigating long discussions on politics and literature by giving him prose to place. #booknerds

"You speak with such conviction, Hans,” Gisela’s soft voice caused me to turn to her. “You inspire me to do something to end this destruction.”
I grinned at her. “Well, you got me started on a lecture with that superb piece from Remarque.”

6. Does anyone disapprove of their relationship?

No. But many of their friends like to tease them about it.

7. What would be an ideal date?

Going on a long walk, attending a concert, dancing, and discussing literature.

8. What are their personality dynamics? Similar? Contrasting? Do they fight a lot or mesh perfectly?

Hans can be impulsive while Gisela is more reserved. They both bring out the best in each other

“Hans, we’re getting soaked,” Gisela squealed through the wind.
“I rather like it,” I ripped off my army cap as another burst of wind wrapped around us.
“What?” She squinted through the rain. She was clutching her hat against her head, and her blue eyes were broad. “Come, the bridge is just a few steps away.”
“Isn’t the rain refreshing?” I gave her a lopsided grin as I set the basket down. I turned to face her.
She stared at me, a flicker of confusion followed by amusement dancing across her face. “Hans, you do make me smile,” she grinned.
"Good. We need more smiling these days.” I laced a hand through hers, and then swooped her into a dance as our wet, sodden clothes brushed against each other.

9. What have been their best and worst moments together as a couple?

Their best moments seem to overlap with their worse moments because the war is always cutting into their wonderful times together.

10. Where do they see themselves and their relationship in the next few years?

Honestly, they don't foresee a future together because of the war. Hans doesn't believe he will survive

My God, I want us to get married, Gisela. I want to always protect you, but I don’t know if I can. I want to say that you can always count on my being there for you, but I don’t know if that’s true. I’m willing to give up my life for this cause.

  1. Hans and Gisela are soo cute. :-) My heart so BROKE for her when he died.
